Fruit of the Spirit…PATIENCE

“But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.”  Romans 8:25 (NLT)

From the life of Ryan, age 9

Whenever Mom and Dad talk about patience, it just means I have to wait for something I want right now!  Like when I’m standing in line at the zoo, “Ryan, the line is moving as fast as it can.  We just have to be patient.”  Or when I’m trying to ask Mom a question, “I’m on the phone right now.  Can you wait until I’m finished with this call?”  And especially on my birthday, “We can’t start celebrating without Grandma and Grandpa.  Please be patient until they get here.”

Dad says I have to work at being patient.  He says practicing patience is no different than practicing a sport; the more I do it, the better I’ll become.  I decided to give it a try.  First, I waited until Dad finished going through the mail before I asked him to shoot hoops with me.  We played basketball together until it was time for dinner!  Then I let my sister order first at the yogurt shop.  I didn’t even care when it took her forever to pick out the toppings.  As I kept practicing being patient, it became easier and easier.  And you know what?  I felt different and more relaxed, too!

Conversation Starters

  1. Everyone can improve on patience!  What changes can you make to become a more patient person?
  2. Name one friend or adult that demonstrates patience.  How do they model patience in their life?  Next time you start to feel impatient, try to imitate the actions of that role model.

An Adult Perspective

Let’s face it, no one likes being around an impatient person!  Patience isn’t a virtue that comes naturally for most people, and few of us have the patience-thing totally nailed down.  I know I don’t.  And while I can easily spot impatience in others, I’m a little more reluctant to confess it in my own life.  Nonetheless, if I expect my family to be practicing and implementing patience, I need to hold myself accountable to that very same standard.  I didn’t have to look far to discover a worthy role model.

I should strive to imitate the patience of God!

God’s patience is driven by love; the unconditional love He has for His family.  That’s you and that’s me!  In scripture, the apostle Paul begins to describe God’s perfect love like this.  “Love is patient, love is kind.”  1 Corinthians 13:4a  (NIV)  Paul goes on to write more, but the simplicity of this verse hits home.  If God models this behavior with His family, am I not expected to pursue a Christ-like patience with mine?  I think that’s the whole point!

As I make an effort to emulate the patience of God,  I need only hold myself accountable to His biblical standard.  Love is patient.  Love is kind.

“Always be humble, gentle, and patient, accepting each other in love.”  Ephesians 4:2  (NCV)
