Fruit of the Spirit…GOODNESS

Costa Rica Mission Trip

Costa Rica Mission Trip

“And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” Hebrews 13:16  (NLT)

A Father’s Perspective

If you ask me, goodness is all about giving.  It’s about the unselfish gift of your time, talent, and resources to help those less fortunate.  Our church has several ministry and service opportunities to help others, so I decided to volunteer.   I chose a community service project that would also involve my family: a breakfast and worship service ministry for the homeless.

We all worked hard that morning setting up tables and chairs, and serving breakfast;  but the real reward came as I watched my family interact with the children and adults who were living at the shelter.  My oldest son seemed to be at ease engaging in conversation with a couple who had come to attend the service.  I watched my other boys walk people to their seats while offering to carry plates or drinks.  My daughter helped the younger children with crafts so their parents could enjoy breakfast and listen to the message.

Yes, my family filled a need early that morning, but the warm feeling of helping others stayed in our hearts for weeks afterward.

Goodness is all about giving.

Conversation Starters

  1. Have you or your family taken part in a community service project?  If so, what do you remember most about volunteering?
  2. If you haven’t had an opportunity to help others, pick a community service project to take part in with your family.
  3. Hebrews 13:16 reminds us to do good and share with those in need.  Is there someone who lives near you that would appreciate your helping hand?

An Adult Perspective

Through Threshold Church in North Carolina, my brother-in-law, Craig, and his wife, Christine, have both traveled to Costa Rica on mission trips.  Many churches offer service opportunities that minister to local or international communities.

Check out the ministry needs of your local church and ask:  How can I use my resources to help those less fortunate?  Remember these words from scripture:  “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”  Acts 20:35 (NCV)

What ministry is in need of your specific talents?
